Dan bird-beak wooden mask – Ivory Coast

Origin and cultural context

This mask originates from the Dan people, located between Ivory Coast and Liberia. The Dan are renowned for their expressive masks used in initiation ceremonies, ritual dances, and symbolic performances. This rare bird-beak variant draws inspiration from totemic birds and stands apart from the more common Dan masks due to its rarity and spiritual depth.

Mask features

Carved from lightweight, patinated wood, the mask features a finely shaped elongated beak, framed by a headdress of natural feathers and rows of cowrie shells. The narrow, pierced eyes give it a penetrating, mysterious gaze. Signs of wear and a rich patina testify to its age and ritual use.

Cultural significance

The beak mask symbolises the spirit of a bird messenger, often associated with the eagle or hornbill, considered a link between humans and unseen forces. In Dan tradition, it could represent a celestial guardian, watching over the community and conveying spiritual messages. The cowries express wealth and protection, while the feather headdress reinforces the celestial connection and symbolic power of the bird.
