Tchokwe

The Tchokwe (or Tshokwe) ethnicity is a Bantu ethnic group from Central Africa mainly concentrated in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. They have a long history of art, culture, and traditions that are still celebrated today.

 

The Tchokwe are known for their craftsmanship, particularly wood carving, jewelry making, and facial masks. They also have a rich oral tradition passed down from generation to generation that tells their history and religious beliefs.

 

Tchokwe society is organized into a class system, with chiefs and nobles having considerable influence. The Tchokwe also practice rituals and ceremonies, including during rites of passage, weddings, and funerals.

 

The Tchokwe language belongs to the Bantu family and is spoken by approximately one million people. They are also known for their music and dance, with traditional drums and stringed instruments often accompanying their ceremonial dances.
