Mossi

The Mossi are a West African people living mainly in Burkina Faso. They are the largest ethnic group in the country, representing about 40% of the total population. The Mossi have a rich and complex history, having founded several kingdoms and resisted European colonization attempts.

The Mossi are organized into chiefdoms and have a matrilineal society, where inheritance and political power are passed down through women. They practice agriculture, mainly cultivating millet, sorghum, and maize, and have a culture rich in music, dance, and crafts.

The Mossi also have a tradition of war and have been renowned for their cavalry for centuries. They resisted several conquerors, including French colonial forces, until Upper Volta (the former name of Burkina Faso) became independent in 1960.

Today, the Mossi continue to practice their cultural traditions while adapting to the economic and social changes of modern life.
